WATERFORD, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the first day of the 2016 GLIAC Championships being held at Waterford Mott High School.
WSU is second with 164 points, trailing Grand Valley State (178) by just 14 points. Northern Michigan is third (90), and is followed by Tiffin (65), Findlay (63), Ashland (54), Saginaw Valley State (44) and Malone (43).
Freshman
Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) began the evening by winning the 1000 free in an NCAA "B" cut time of 9:18.05. Classmate
Blake Wheeler (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa), who swam his timed final during the morning session finished fifth.
Freshman
Grzegorz Klos (Ruda Slaska, Poland) placed third in the 200 individual medley with an NCAA "B" time of 1:48.77. Newcomer
Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark) was eighth (1:53.16), while junior
Mitch Bohr (Novi, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) won the consolation finals (1:52.08) to finish ninth.
The Warriors totaled 60 points in the 50 free as five different swimmers scored. Senior
Ben Winn (Washington, Mich. / Romeo) won first place in an NCAA "B" time of 20.70. Sophomore
Tyler Roshak (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Harrison) also had an NCAA "B" time and finished fifth (20.82). Senior
Jayson Hansen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) was sixth (21.06), while junior
Juan David Molina Perez (Medellin, Colombia) won the consolation finals in an NCAA "B time of 20.83. Senior
Eric Gensheimer (Farmington, Mich.) rounded out the quintet placing 13th (21.20).
Wayne State finished second in the 200 medley relay. Molina Perez, Hansen, Olsen and Winn combined for an NCAA "B" time of 1:28.77.
Thursday morning prelims begin at 10 a.m.
