DETROIT -- In the second annual City College Classic contest between Wayne State University and the University of Detroit Mercy, the visiting Warriors rallied for a 79-77 triumph at Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall. WSU won the inaugural game in 2016 by an 85-79 score.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With Wayne State trailing 75-74 and under a minute to play in regulation, Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) had a put-back with 43.0 seconds remaining to put the Warriors ahead 76-75.
On the ensuing possession, Detroit Mercy's Jermaine Jackson, Jr. drove down the lane and scored an unorthodox basket giving the hosts a 77-76 advantage with 28.6 seconds left.
On WSU's next possession, Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) took a feed from a driving
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) and dunked home his only two points of the contest with 15.8 seconds remaining.
Following a Detroit Mercy timeout with 9.2 seconds left, the Warriors forced a turnover.
Freshman Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) was fouled on the inbounds and made the second in a double bonus situation putting WSU in front 79-77 with 6.7 seconds remaining.
Detroit Mercy's Jackson had a good look at the buzzer but the shot would not fall.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) made eight field goals and was 9-of-11 from the charity stripe in scoring a game-high 27 points. Davis, Jr. chipped in with 21 points and a game-best nine rebounds.

JAckson, Jr. had a team-best 19 points, while Tariiq Jones added 13 points off the bench.

Wayne State will host the GLIAC/G-MAC Challenge on Nov. 11-12 at the Matthaei. Lake Superior will play Kentucky Wesleyan at 6 pm on Nov. 11, followed by the Warriors contest against Alderson Broaddus at 8 p.m. On Sunday, Nov. 12, LSSU will battle Alderson Broaddus at 1 p.m., with Wayne State's contest vs. Kentucky Wesleyan slated for 3 p.m.
