BAY CITY, Mich. -- The GLIAC announced its men's tennis awards following the conclusion of the league tournament on Sunday and Warrior newcomer
Mats Westkamp (Bonn, Germany) was voted GLIAC Freshman of the Year and was named First Team All-GLIAC by the league's head coaches. He becomes the third WSU men's tennis student-athlete to win the award in program history, following Miguel Cobbs in 2004 and
Antoine Marenaud in 2007.
Additionally, senior
Clement Charriere (Marseille, France) and sophomore
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) were Second Team All-GLIAC honorees, while sophomore
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) was named to the Honorable Mention All-GLIAC Team.
Westkamp helped lead the Warriors to a 6-3 conference record, which was tied-for-third. Wayne State concluded the regular-season with an 8-5 Division II record as Westkamp compiled an 11-7 mark at No. 1 singles, including a 6-3 record in conference play. Despite being paired with two different partners (
Griffin Mertz and
Taylor Vane) during the season, Westkamp earned a 6-3 doubles record during GLIAC competition, including a 3-1 mark at first doubles.
In WSU's 5-4 setback at GLIAC Champion Ferris State, Westkamp won his No. 1 singles match in straight sets against last year's GLIAC Freshman of the Year and this season's Player of the Year (Till von Winning), while suffering a 9-8 defeat at first doubles.
In the April 19th ITA Midwest Regional Rankings, Westkamp was ranked 10th in singles.
Charriere went 10-8 in singles competition and a 11-11 doubles mark during the regular season. Vane finished the season with a 9-7 singles record alongside an 11-8 doubles mark. Mertz posted a 12-9 record in singles play and a 12-9 mark in his doubles results.
