Women's Swim and Dive Wins 149-87 Against Calvin

Sophomore Jia Yi Koh claimed the top spot in three events.
DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad (4-1 overall, 2-0 GLIAC) notched a 149-87 victory against the Calvin Knights (2-1 overall) at home on Friday.

Prior to the meet, the Warriors were ranked 23rd nationally by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) in the second TYR Top 25 Dual Meet Swimming and Diving Poll of the season.

QUALIFYING STANDARDS

Sophomore Amanda Hurchalla (Mount Clemens, Mich. / Fraser) placed first in the one-meter diving event (269.92 points) and the three-meter dive (282.82 points).  Both scores surpassed the NCAA qualifying standards of 255 (one meter) and 265 (three meter).

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

Senior Lezlie Bueno Estrada (Chihuahua, Mexico) won the 50 free (24.74) and the 100 free (53.76).

Sophomore Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) came in first place in the 200 free (1:57.16) and held the top time in the 100 breast (1:05.73).

Freshman Marjorie Myers (Pittsburgh, Penn. / Franklin Regional) claimed the top spot in the 1650 free (18:09.05).

Junior Kate Svisko (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) led the 400 IM (4:44.29).

Sophomore Haley Groteler (West Ottawa, Mich.) placed first in the 100 fly (58.00).

Junior Ashlen Michalski (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) won the 100 back in a time of 59.08.

Senior Emily Marginean (Tecumseh, Ont.) earned the top time in the 500 free (5:13.18).

RELAY RESULTS

WSU came in first place in the 200 medley relay (1:48.02).  The winning quartet consisted of Michalski, Koh, freshman Julia Brunner (Traverse City, Mich. / Saint Francis), and Bueno Estrada.

Wayne State also placed first in the 200 free relay (1:39.51).  The group included Groteler, freshman Brynn Nevins (Tecumseh, Mich.), Brunner, and junior Aliza Durack (West Bloomfield, Mich.).

"I was very pleased overall with the women's program.  They started off very strong with the medley relay and the 1650, and kept it rolling in every event.  The divers, Amanda and Mia, really looked fantastic out there today."

UP NEXT

The Warriors will travel to Granville, Ohio, to compete at the Denison Invitational from Nov. 29 to Dec. 1.
