2018 Football Position Previews - Quarterbacks

Dakota Kupp won three of his four starts in 2017.

DETROIT -- As we reach one week until the 2018 season begins, this next to last position feature is on the quarterbacks with coach Jeff Reardon.

When fall camp began earlier this month, there was a three-way battle to be the signal caller on opening day with junior Dakota Kupp (Waterford, Mich. / Mott), senior D.J. Zezula (Clarkston, Mich.) and sophomore Jake AmRhein (South Elgin, Ill.).

Kupp compiled a 3-1 record, while starting the final four games of 2017. He passed for a career-high 234 yards in the win over Northern Michigan.

Zezula started 28 straight games from Sept. 12, 2015, through Oct. 14, 2017, compiling a 15-13 record. He currently has the best marks in school history in passing efficiency rating (144.9 - min. 105 attempts) and yards per pass attempt (8.3 - min. 105 attempts), while ranking second in passing yards (4,885), passing touchdowns (43), completion percentage (57.5 - min. 105 attempts), total offense per game (167.2) and total offense per play (6.70).

AmRhein saw action in three contests a year ago.

Also in the mix at quarterback is junior Christian Klink (Olmsted Falls, Ohio / Parma Heights Holy Name) and a pair of true freshmen in Luke Pfromm (Warren, Mich. / De La Salle) and Chase Churchill (Richmond, Mich.). Pfromm helped lead De La Salle to the 2017 MHSAA Division 2 state title by completing 10-of-12 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns in the 41-6 win over Livonia Franklin. Churchill was the Blue Water Area Conference (BWAC) Offensive Most Valuable Player after passing for 1,521 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior, while completing 78-of-123 passes
