Men's Swim and Dive Breaks Six Pool Records in Final Home Meet

Two seniors were recognized prior to the meet.

Senior Dima Drobnych broke three pool records.
DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad notched a 171-103 victory over Findlay on Friday night, while also breaking six pool records.

Prior to the start of the final home meet, two seniors were recognized for their time on the team, including Dima Drobnych (Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine) and Rasmus Olsen (Kastrup, Denmark).

QUALIFYING STANDARDS

Olsen attained the number one spot in the 100 fly with a time of 48.18, making the B Cut standard and breaking the WSU pool record.  He also claimed the top spot in the 50 fly (22.74).

Junior Sasha Palazzo (Verona, Italy) notched a victory in the 50 breast (24.80).  He also swam the fastest time in the 100 breast (54.87), qualifying him for the B Standard and setting a new WSU pool record.

Junior Ryan Katulski (Novi, Mich.) finished first in the 50 free (20.71), garnering a B Cut qualification.

INDIVIDUAL RESULTS

Drobnych earned first-place finishes in the 50 back (23.04) and the 100 back (48.32).  He broke the pool record in the 100 back and also set a new pool record in the 200 back (1:47.85).

Freshman Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma) claimed the top spot in the 1650 free (17:07.78).

Junior Ahmed Ahmed (Alexandria, Egypt) finished first in the 200 free (1:45.08) and swam the fastest time in the 500 free (4:45.66).

Freshman Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.) earned first place in the one-meter dive (216.00 points) and the three-meter dive (234.30).

Redshirt freshman Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) attained the top spot in the 100 free (46.07).

Junior Joao Martimbianco Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) swam the quickest time in the 400 IM (4:04.65).

RELAY RESULTS

WSU notched a victory in the 400 medley relay (3:18.36).  The winning quartet included Drobnych, Palazzo, Olsen, and Katulski.

The Green and Gold also had the fastest time in the 400 free relay (3:02.87).  The group consisted of Palazzo, Mueller, Katulski, and Olsen.

Both quartets broke WSU pool records.

"Today was one of the finest performances I have seen, from both squads.  The Men were just astounding, with setting six pool records and watching some of our young talent rise.  Overall, it was a great day for the Warriors and I am so proud of how we performed and for giving seniors Dima Drobnych and Rasmus Olsen a final Matthaei showdown to remember."

The Warriors will participate in the GLIAC Championships in Cleveland beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
