DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad (18-3 overall, 8-0 GLIAC) was ranked second in the region by the NCAA selection committee.
WSU trails UIndy in the Midwest Region Rankings. Following the Warriors are Drury, Grand Valley State, Lewis, Missouri-St. Louis, Ferris State, Northwood, Illinois-Springfield, and Tiffin. Wayne State has an overall Division II record of 14-2 and a 12-0 mark in the region and concluded its 2018-19 regular-season with an 11-match winning streak.
The 2019 GLIAC Champions were placed in the top 25 of the Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Rankings with 30.13 points. WSU is the only team from the GLIAC that is ranked in the top 35, as well as one of the two GLIAC teams in the top 50 (No. 36-Grand Valley State).
Seniors
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) were ranked 26th in the nation by the ITA after an exceptional season. The No. 1 doubles duo went undefeated in the conference (8-0) and had a 16-6 overall record this season.
Up next, the Green and Gold will travel to Midland, Mich., to participate in the 2019 GLIAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The conference tournament begins on April 26.
