Men's Swimming and Diving In Second Place After Day One of GLIACs

Cvetko wins 50 Free; 200 Medley Relay Claims League Title

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad is in second place after the opening day of the 2021 GLIAC Championships, which is being held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.

The Warriors totaled 170 points on day one and trail Grand Valley State, who leads with 271 points.  Behind WSU are Northern Michigan (137.5), St. Cloud State (92), Davenport (70), Saginaw Valley State (63.5) and Ashland (24).

The opening day highlight for Wayne State was sophomore Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) winning the 50 free in a "B" cut time of 19.81.  Besides Cvetko, WSU had five other swimmers compete in the championship finals of the 50 free.

Redshirt junior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany) was second (20.02), while freshman Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) was third (20.18).  Senior Jack Rogers (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) was sixth with teammates Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) and freshman Brody Jamieson (Farmington, Mich.) finishing seventh (20.56) and eighth, respectively (20.62).  All six swimmers notched "B" cut times Wednesday evening.

WSU's 200 medley relay concluded the evening by winning the event in a "B" cut time of 1:27.49.  The winning quartet consisted of Mueller, sophomore Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), Wolsek and Cvetko.

The Warriors had four scorers in the 1000 free timed final led by freshman Casey Dolen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), who placed eighth (9:44.19).  Classmate Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) finished 11th (9:47.63), while sophomore Matt Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich.) was 14th (9:49.51).  Junior Chris Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) placed 15th (9:51.77), with senior Tanner Robertson (Carmel, Ind. / Lake Orion, Mich.) finishing 21st (10:24.20).

Freshman Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) notched a "B" cut mark for the second time on the day in the 200 IM finishing second in 1:48.17.  Senior Tristan Fraley (St. Clair, Mich.) placed 15th in a time of 1:55.55.
