HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving team is in second place after the second day of the 2021 GLIAC Championships, which is being held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.
The Warriors have a two-day total of 334 points and trail Grand Valley State, who leads with 534 points. Behind WSU are Northern Michigan (266.5), St. Cloud State (206.5), Davenport (148), Saginaw Valley State (146) and Ashland (86).
The highlight of day two for WSU was freshman
Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) placing second in the 100 fly (46.89) followed by freshman
Brody Jamieson (Farmington, Mich.) in fourth place (49.27). Wolsek's time improved upon his B cut mark set during the prelims.
Wayne States two participants in the consolation finals for the 100 fly were junior
Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) and sophomore
Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.). Nowinski placed 13th (50.84) and Mahaney finished 15th (50.93).
Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) finished the 400 IM in third with an NCAA "B" qualifier time of 3:54.93.
In the consolation final for the 400 IM, freshman
Marko Vucelic (Wixom, Mich. / Walled Lake Western) placed ninth (4:05.40) and junior Christopher Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) finished in 11th (4:09.54). Junior
Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) placed 15th (4:16.11).
There was only one Warrior in the 200 free "A" final and sophomore Casey Dolan (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter) placed eighth (1:44.78). In the consolation final, sophomore
Matt Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich.) finished in 15th (1:43.60).
The Warriors placed first in the 200 free relay posting an NCAA "B" qualifier time (1:19.41). The quartet consisted of redshirt junior
Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), Nowinski, senior
Jack Rogers (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central), and Jamieson.
WSU placed first in the 400 medley relay and also had a NCAA "B" qualifier time (3:13.22). The squad consisted of Mueller, sophomore
Hans Anderson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson), Wolsek, and sophomore
Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia).
