Women's Basketball Suffers 78-63 Setback At SVSU

Fugate and Cherney combine for 22 points.

Box Score UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (8-7 overall and GLIAC) had its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 78-63 setback at Saginaw Valley State University (7-8 overall and GLIAC) Friday evening.

FIRST HALF RECAP
The Warriors took an early 6-0 lead as sophomore guard Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) connected on back-to-back three pointers in the opening minute.  The Cardinals answered with a 10-0 run before junior forward Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) made a jumper at the 5:33 mark.

A jumper by senior Kara Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) a minute later knotted the game at 12-12.  Following a triple by SVSU's Maddie Maloney, Fugate made another basket to pull the Warriors within one at 13-12.

Saginaw Valley State ended the opening stanza on a 6-2 run to lead 19-14.  Fugate led all scorers with 10 points in the first quarter.

The Cardinals extended their lead to nine (23-14) before another Cherney hoop.  SVSU's Maddie Barrie made consecutive triples prior to senior Ariel Bethea (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) ending the spurt with a bucket.

Wayne State scored seven of the next 11 points with Bethea making two more field goals and freshman Jolee Houle (Zeeland, Mich. / Grand Haven) connecting from beyond the arc cutting the WSU deficit to eight (33-25).

Saginaw Valley State scored the final nine points before intermission to take a 42-25 advantage at halftime.

SECOND HALF RECAP
The Cardinals started the second half the way they ended the opening 20 minutes by outscoring the Warriors 9-4 in the first four-plus minutes to lead 51-29.

Five straight points by junior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) and a lay-up by Wilson pulled WSU within 15 (51-36).

Wayne State was never closer than 15 the rest of the way as SVSU notched a 78-63 win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Fugate had a team-high 12 points, while Cherney chipped in with 10 points, a team-best seven rebounds and four blocks.

LEADING THE CARDINALS
Barrie and Kaitlyn Zarycki each scored 18 points, while Kyndall Spires contributed 13 points and a game-high eight rebounds.

TEAM STATS
WSU shot 43 percent (22-of-51) from the floor, compared to 53 percent (32-of-60) for the Cardinals.  Both teams made five triples as the Warriors were 5-of-16 (31 percent) and Saginaw Valley attempted 19 long-range shots (26 percent).  Wayne State made 70 percent (14-of-20) from the foul line, while SVSU was 9-of-14 from the charity stripe (64 percent).
