Women's Swimming Performs Well on Saturday Prelims

Groteler and Chorley each place second in the prelims of 100 free and 200 backs, respectively.

HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving team had 12 swimmers and two divers advance to the Saturday evening finals from the day four prelims of the 2021 GLIAC Championships being held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.

In the 100 free, seniors Haley Groteler (Holland, Mich. / West Ottawa) and Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) both qualified for the Championship finals after finishing second (52.10) and third (52.22) in the prelims.  Groteler's time was an NCAA "B" cut mark.  Three Warriors advanced to the Consolation finals of the 100 free - freshman Isidora Sekaric (Windsor, Ont. / W.F. Herman Academy) was 10th (52.98), graduate student Allison Lennig (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) placed 11th (53.07) and sophomore Marina Tarlev (Athens, Greece) finished 13th (53.25).  Also swimming the 100 free were senior Leticia Camilo Lemos (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and freshman Megan Sieloff (Grand Blanc, Mich.).  Lemos placed 17th (53.74), while Sieloff was 19th (54.04).

Both WSU competitiors in the 200 back advances to the "A" finals.  Sophomore Maddy Chorley (Burton, Mich. / Davison) was second in the prelims (2:03.39), while junior Sydney Balk (Farmington, Mich.) was sixth (2:08.73).

Sophomore Abby Warner (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) and junior Ashleigh Allen (Clarkston, Mich.) both qualified for the "B" finals of the 200 breast.  Warner was 12th in the prelims (2:28.53) with Allen placing 16th (2:32.14).  Freshman Darina Malinova (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren Mott) finished 19th (2:41.46, while senior Adrianna Waack (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) was 20th (2:42.92).

Competing in the 1650 free timed final are senior Sophie Montesanti (Howell, Mich), freshman Juliana Witt (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Dakota) and classmate Justine Czyrka (Northville, Mich.).

Wayne State has two divers participating on the three-meter board competition.  Senior Amanda Hurchalla (Mount Clemens, Mich. / Fraser) and freshman Mikaela Senkus (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies - Eisenhower).

The one relay being contested this evening is the 400 Free Relay.

Tonight's competition will conclude the 2021 GLIAC Championships.
