BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving squad totaled 39 points on the final day of the 2021 NCAA Division 2 National Championships to finish ninth out of 31 schools with 158 points.
The final event of the championship was the men's 400 free relay and the WSU quartet of redshirt junior
Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), sophomore
Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia), freshman
Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) and freshman
Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.) finished fifth in a time of 2:55.46, more than two seconds faster than their seed time.
Cvetko earned 11 points earlier in the evening with an eighth-place finish in the 100 free (43.88).
The ninth-place team finish marks the 20th consecutive year, Wayne State has finished in the top 18 at nationals, and 13th time in the top 10.
The aforementioned quartet earned a total of four First Team All-American certificates in relays wtih a fifth-place finish in the 200 free relay, along with a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and the 400 medley relay.
Wolsek received two First Team All-America accolades during the championships with a sixth-place finish in the 100 fly and an eight-place finish in the 50 free. Cvetko also earned First Team All-America recognition in the 100 free as mentioned above.
Cvetko (50 free), Mueller (100 back), and Capizzo (200 fly, 200 IM and 400 IM) all earned Honorable Mention All-America certificates for their individual performances.
