Cherney and Sherwood Receive All-GLIAC Recognition

DETROIT -- Wayne State University junior women's basketball players Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington ) and Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) received All-GLIAC recognition as announced by the league office today.

Cherney was voted to the All-GLIAC First Team after averaging a double-double during the regular-season with 11.3 points per game and 11.9 rebounds per contest.  She led the squad in both field goals made and free throws made.  Her selection marks the first time a Warrior has earned First Team All-League honors since Shannon Wilson was recognized following the 2017-18 campaign.

Cherney, who led the GLIAC in rebounding (11.9 RPG) and blocked shots (2.6 BPG) during the regular season, was also named to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team for the second consecutive year.  One of the squad's tri-captains, Cherney was selected GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Feb. 15th after leading the Warriors to a sweep of Parkside.  Cherney was second on the squad in steals.  Her All-Defensive Team recognition marks the fifth time in program history a WSU student-athlete has a been a two-time All-Defensive Team honoree joining Ebony Vincent (2002-03 and 2003-04), Joy Nash (2006-07 and 2007-08), Shareta Brown (2013-14 and 2014-15), and Ja'Nae Williams (2017-18 and 2018-19).

Sherwood was voted to the All-GLIAC Second Team.  She played in 15 regular-season contests, scoring in double figures in nine of her final 11 games increasing her season scoring average to 11.5 points per game.  Sherwood averaged nearly five rebounds per contest and was solid at the free throw line making 42-of-48 (87.5 percent), including 11-of-11 at the charity stripe in a win at Saginaw Valley State.  She tied Cherney for the team lead in scoring average, while ranking third on the squad in both steals and blocked shots, and second in assists.
