Spicer, Drenth and Grey Set for ITA Cup

Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey are the No. 1 overall seed in the doubles bracket.

DETROIT -- After strong performances at the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament, Wayne State University men's tennis players Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany), Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) and Dom Spicer (London, England) will have the chance to compete in the ITA Cup, formerly known as the Small College Nationals.  Play will begin in Rome, Ga., on Oct. 13 and run through Oct. 16 at the Rome Tennis Center.

Drenth and Grey enter as the No. 1 overall seed in the doubles draw and will square off with Columbus State's Santiago Perez and Javier Ceuto Ramos to open the tournament.  As a team, the Warriors defeated then No. 1-ranked Columbus State in the NCAA Division 2 semifinals.  The Green and Gold's top doubles team was 27-9 a season ago, beating four nationally-ranked challengers.

Perez and Cueto Ramos won the ITA Southeast Regional Championship in September.  Drenth and Grey finished as the runner-up in the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament.

Spicer enters the singles competition as an unseeded player, but has had his fair share of upset victories over the course of his career at Wayne State.  He is the reigning GLIAC Player of the Year and compiled a 24-11 overall singles record last season.  Spicer won three matches over nationally ranked opponents, including Embry-Riddles No. 2-ranked player in Juan Ortiz Couder (Spring Break Trip), and Columbus State's No. 1-ranked player in Alvara Regalado in last year's NCAA DII National Semifinal.

Spicer will open the tournament against the No. 3 overall seed in the draw, which is North Georgia's Joaquin Benoit.  Benoit fell in the ITA Southeast Regional Championships earlier this fall.  Spicer was a semifinalist in the ITA Midwest Regional Tournament.
