Men's Golf Concludes Fall Schedule With Win At Dual In Dearborn

Warriors defeat UM-Dearborn at TPC in Dearborn.

DEARBORN, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's golf squad, ranked 31st in NCAA Division II this week in the Bushnell/Golfweek Division II Coaches Poll, defeated the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Friday at the Dual in Dearborn held at the TPC of Michigan.

"We had outstanding play from Max Leppelmeier with a 67," commented 22-year head coach Mike Horn.  "Max is turning out to be quite a player and quite consistent.  We also received very good rounds from Ian Smith, Luke Pelak and Tyler Hurtubise.  They all had solid performances and we are looking to get more of these type of rounds come spring time.  Up and down the lineup we played well.  We are looking for a great off-season with lots of work to get us to the next level.  I think this team is capable of some special things but it will not come without hard work."

Sophomore Max Leppelmeier (Wauseon, Ohio / Pettisville) recorded six birdies to just one bogey in shooting a five-under 67.  Junior Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) also notched six birdies in posting a three-under 69.  Redshirt junior Luke Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) garnered three birdies and also recorded an eagle in shooting a three-under 69.

Senior Josh DiCarlo (Amherstburg, Ont. / General Amherst) had a stretch of five birdies in eight holes and ended the round at 73.  Redshirt junior Garret Day (Chatham, Ont. / Ursuline College Chatham) also notched an eagle on his way to posting a 75.

Sophomore Tyler Hurtubise (Essex, Ont. / Essex District) led the WSU group of individuals with a 71.  The trio of redshirt sophomore Haydon Chapman (Marshall, Mich.), redshirt junior Matt Pelak (Mattawan, Mich.) and redshirt junior Alex Saroli (LaSalle, Ont. / Holy Names) all shot a 73.

Redshirt sophomore Conor Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) carded a 76, while redshirt sophomore Max O'Rourke (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Walled Lake Northern) had an 80, and junior Chris Yousif (Commerce Twp., Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) shot an 81.

The Warriors will be idle from competition until beginning their spring season on March 18-19 at the SVSU Spring Invitational in Lexington, Ky.
