Women's Fencing Competes At The Ohio State Open

Mancini led WSU with an 11th-place finish in the foil.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Three members of the Wayne State University women's fencing squad competed at the 2022 The Ohio State University Open held on Saturday, October 29th at the OSU French Field House.

Freshman Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) finished 11th in the foil.  She went 5-1 (+17 in touches / 29-12) during pool play to garner the eighth seed for direction elimination.  Mancini posted a 15-4 triumph over Rongrui Zhang in the table of 32, before falling 15-12 to ninth-seeded Alina Lee in the table of 16.

WSU alumnus Alyssa Hirsch also competed in the foil.  Hirsch went 3-3 (-1 in touches / 19-20) during pool play and lost 15-3 in the table of 32 to place 21st.


In the epee competition, junior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) placed 13th.  She compiled a 2-3 record (-1 in touches / 18-19) during pool play to earn the 12th seed for the direct elimination.  In the table of 32, Shevchenko notched a 15-9 victory over Isabella Pilon.  She fell in the next round, 12-11, to fifth-seeded Elaine Hong.

Junior Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Woods Tower) participated in the sabre competition.  She went 1-4 (-17 in touches / 6-23) during pool play, and lost a 15-4 decision to Ohio State's Katherine Larimer in the round of 32 to finish 27th.

Wayne State will host an Alumni Meet on Saturday, November 12th, followed by the Danosi Open on November 13th.
