ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad tallied 58 points on day two to jump two spots into third place for the championships. The third-place finish is the best-ever in the 10-year history of the program, while the 58 points on day two matches the previous school record set in 2018.

Grand Valley State won the GLIAC title with 248.50 points, while Saginaw Valley State was second with 130.50 points. WSU was third with a school-record 75 points, and was followed by Davenport (74.33), Northern Michigan (58), Parkside (35.33), Northwood (29), Ferris State (9.33) and Lake Superior State (2).
Quoting Coach Lofdahl
"This weekend was a good example of a team growing up and coming together. On Saturday we did what we needed to do, and set ourselves up to have a big second day. Sunday was full of ups and downs, and there were plenty of things that didn't go our way. Midway through the meet, we were down and needed a spark, and it came from
Makayla Sumrall and
Aliyah McDonald in the 60. They scored 16 points and got the ball rolling for the rest of the team.
"Those two young ladies each had an amazing run in the 200 as well, with Sumrall setting her third different school record between indoor and outdoor seasons.
Reagan Justice stepped up big despite being just a true freshman, and the same goes for Kenzie Wellner,
Emily Gordon, and
Renae Kutcha.
Mikayla Williams finally got a conference crown, she's been close several times in the past, and it was great to see her on top of the podium in the triple jump.
"We always preach that every single point counts, and that was evident from
MaKayla Rawls' three points in weight throw on Day 1, all the way to the final few meters of the 4x4 relay to conclude the meet. Both of our relay teams really got the job done to end each day, and as a coaching staff we are proud of the efforts that everyone gave over the course of this meet. And we're excited to see what's next, at nationals and then outdoor season!"
