Women's Basketball Wins 81-65 At Northwood

Victory ends eight-game winning streak for the Timberwolves.

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (13-5 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) posted an 81-65 triumph at Northwood University (14-7 overall, 8-6 GLIAC) on Monday evening to sweep the season series and snap the Timberwolves eight-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The score was tied three times in the first 3:30 of the contest, before a triple by senior Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) ignited a 7-0 run which included a free throw by senior Grace George (DeWitt, Mich.) and a lay-up by senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville).  Following a long-range shot by NU, George answered with her own triple and Sherwood scored again from inside.  The Timberwolves tallied the final two points of the period, but the visiting Warriors still led 18-12 after 10 minutes.  Sherwood led WSU with six points in the stanza.

Second Quarter
Wayne State began the period on an 11-0 run as Northwood was held scoreless for over 3:30.  Junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) started the barrage with a triple, and Miller knocked down back-to-back three-point shots before George scored from down low for a 29-12 advantage 2:20 into the frame.  Following a bucket by NU, Fugate drained another triple.  The teams traded baskets until late in the quarter when the Timberwolves tallied the final five points before intermission cutting the Warrior margin to 13 at 41-28.  Miller connected on three long-range shots in the period for nine points.

Third Quarter
Northwood began the second half on a 6-3 run to pull within 10 (44-34), but every time the Timberwolves tried to mount a comeback, George and junior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) responded for the Warriors.  George recorded 15 points in the period, including three triples, while Moore contributed seven points in the stanza.  In a high-scoring quarter that saw 50 points scored, WSU extended its advantage to 15 points (67-52) heading into the final stanza.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State's lead was trimmed to 13 on three occasions (73-60, 75-62 and 78-65), but each time the Warriors responded with points.  Senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) scored six of WSU's 14 points in the period, while George and Fugate each added four points.
