Women's Swimming and Diving Striving For Strong Finish At GLIACs

Fourteen swimmers advance to Monday evening finals.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's swimming and diving squad had six swimmers qualify for the Championship finals, plus another eight advance to the Consolation finals.  Both divers advanced to the finals in the one-meter competition, while at least two distance swimmers will score in the 1650 free timed final.

100 FREE
Senior Julia Brunner (Traverse City, Mich. / St. Francis) notched a "B" cut time of 51.60 and finished in second place to advance to the Championship finals.  Freshman Sabine Branford (Plymouth, Mich. / Salem) also qualified for the "A" finals with an eighth-place time of 52.60.

WSU had four qualifiers for the Consolation finals in sophomore Isidora Sekaric (Windsor, Ont. / W.F. Herman Academy), who finished ninth (52.69); freshman Hailee Waters (Dexter, Mich.), who placed 10th (52.74); junior Marina Tarlev (Athens, Greece), who finished 11th (52.91); and sophomore Hannah Gurecki (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), who was 12th (53.03).

Recording exhibition swims for the Warriors were freshman Julia Katulski (Novi, Mich.), who swam a 53.45; freshman Lauren Paris (Chesterfield, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), who clocked in at 54.76; sophomore Peyton Michalski (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland), posted a time of 54.79; sophomore Darina Malinova (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Warren Mott) touched the wall in 54.90; while sophomore Justine Czyrka (Northville, Mich.) had a time of 1:02.56.

200 BACK
Junior Jordan Fox (Melbourne, Australia) posted the best prelim time swimming a "B" cut standard of 2:01.01.  Freshman Evie Dice (Waterford, Mich. / Clarkston) will also swim in the Championship finals after placing seventh (2:06.67).

Junior Maddy Chorley (Burton, Mich. / Davison) advanced to the "B" finals after finishing ninth (2:08.66) and will be joined by freshman Megan Elmquist (Davison, Mich.), who finished 10th (2:08.89).

Senior Sydney Balk (Farmington, Mich.) notched an exhibition time of 2:09.25.

200 BREAST
Graduate student Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia) registered a second-place time of 2:18.51, which was a "B" cut mark.  Gurecki also qualified for the "A" finals with a seventh-place time of 2:24.20.

Both junior Abby Warner (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Eisenhower) and senior Ashleigh Allen (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Clarkston) earned spots in the Consolation finals after finishing 11th (2:29.63) and 14th (2:32.82), respectively.

Junior Hannah Cooper (Ortonville, Mich. / Brandon) recorded an exhibition time of 2:34.44.

1650 FREE
With the top eight seeds still to swim tonight, the rest of the field swam the timed final earlier today.  Sophomore Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia) touched the wall in 17:50.15 which put her second depending on the final swim this evening.

Sophomore Megan Sieloff (Grand Blanc, Mich.) will also score in the event after finishing seventh this morning with a time of 18:04.68.

Sophomore Juliana Witt (Macomb Twp., Mich. / Dakota) is currently ninth with a time of 18:13.12, while classmate Amelia Plonis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) is 12th (18:35.46).


ONE-METER DIVING
Both sophomore Mikaela Senkus (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies – Eisenhower) and junior Marissa Woida (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt) advanced to this evening's finals after placing third (422.75) and seventh (385.40), respectively during this afternoon's prelims.

400 FREE RELAY
Wayne State is the No. 2 seed for the final women's event of the championships.

UP NEXT
The Monday evening finals will consist of the 100 free, 200 back, 200 breast, and one-meter diving along with the conclusion of the timed final of the 1650 free, while the 400 free relay will conclude the championships.
