Swim and Dive Teams Finish Day 1 of NCAA Championships

The men's team is in ninth, while the women's team sits in 19th.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Wayne State University men's and women's swimming and diving squads concluded day one of the NCAA Championships Wednesday night at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.  The men's team ended the day in ninth place after tallying 48 points.  The women's squad is currently tied-for-19th place after earning 14 points on day one. 

To begin the night, the quartet of Jordan Fox (Melbourne Austrailia), Jia Yi Koh (Subang Jaya, Malaysia), Julia Brunner (Traverse City, Mich. / St. Francis) and Marina Tarlev (Athens, Greece) collected 15th place in the 200 medley relay.  They posted a time of 1:44.25 and collected four points for the Green and Gold. 

Following that, the men's 200 medley relay team of Clayton Kinnard (Dexter, Mich.), Alex Capizzo (Fraser, Mich.), Michael Wolsek (Trenton, Mich.) and Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia) finished in 12th place with a time of 1:27.89.  That earned the Warriors 10 points toward the team total. 

After notching a 1000 free time of 10:12.53 in the morning session, Fox officially earned 11th place overall in the event.  That added six points to the WSU women's team score. 

In the 50 free, Cvetko claimed seventh place, recording a time of 19.69.  He garnered 12 points for WSU. 

To conclude the night, the men's and women's teams each participated in the 200 free relay.  The women's team of Koh, Brunner, Tarlev and Barbara Munoz (Yumbo, Colombia) placed 15th, touching out in 1:34.14.  They helped WSU collect four points. 

The men's quartet of Cvetko, Wolsek, Trevor Jones (Farmington, Mich.) and Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North) finished sixth, recording a time of 1:18.74.  That added 26 points to the Warriors' score. 

The top eight swimmers in each event earn First Team All-American honors, while places 9-16 receive Honorable Mention All-American accolades. 

UP NEXT
Wolsek and Cvetko will compete in the 100 fly prelims tomorrow morning, while Fox will take part in the 200 free.  Diving wise, Mikaela Senkus (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies) and Marissa Woida (Lincoln Park, Mich. / Wyandotte Roosevelt) will participate in the three-meter diving prelims Thursday afternoon.
