Women's Track Competes At Baldwin Wallace Last Chance Meet

Warriors won two events and had three runner-up finishes.

BEREA, Ohio -- Selected members of the Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad competed on Friday at the 2022 Harris Dillard Twilight hosted by Baldwin Wallace at the George Finnie Stadium inside the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds.  WSU had two event winners and posted three-runner up finishes.

Junior sprinter Makayla Sumrall (Roseville, Mich.), after placing second in the prelims of the 100m dash (12.00), broke the stadium record set in 1999 by winning the finals heat in 11.66 (just .02 behind the school record she set last month at Oakland University).

Junior jumper Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) recorded a pair of runner-up finishes.  Williams placed second in both the long jump at a distance of 5.51m, and the triple jump with a mark of 11.32m.

Junior Thailyia Christensen (Flushing, Mich.) notched a second-place finish in the 5000m run in a time of 18:23.45, while senior Chloe Wandell (Muir, Mich. / Ionia) placed seventh clocking in at 19:01.55.

Senior Ashley Defrain (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) won the 10,000m event in the seventh-fastest time in program history at 37:44.16.

Senior Aliyah McDonald (Kingston, Jamaica) finished third in the 100m hurdles in a time of 14.52.  She advanced to the finals after a prelims time of 14.98.

Senior Kaleigh Flowers (Grand Rapids, Mich. / East Kentwood) placed eighth in the discus with the fifth-best throw in school history at 39.64m.

Flowers finished 11th in the hammer (45.19m), while senior Izzy Taylor (Three Rivers, Mich.) was 23rd with a toss of 31.82m.

UP NEXT
The NCAA will announce the selections for the NCAA Championships this coming week.  Sumrall was rated 18th for the 100m dash last week and 43rd in the 200m dash (24.32).  McDonald was ranked 23rd in the 100m hurdles (13.96) with Christensen rated 44th in the steeplechase (10:58.87).  In addition, freshman Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem) was ranked 49th in the 10,000m event with a time of 36:12.06.
