Women's Fencing Competes at Philadelphia Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, PENN. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team competed at the Philadelphia Invitational on Sunday, going 0-5 for the day. WSU fell to Princeton (27-0), host Penn (22-5), Yale (24-3), St. John's (22-3, plus two double forfeits), and Columbia (25-2). Nine of the 13 wins from the Warriors came from freshman Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) in the foil.

EPEE RESULTS
Freshman Jordan Baetz (Commerce, Mich.) finished 0-15, while junior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) went 1-14. Shevchenko won her bout over Penn's Elizabeth Wang.

FOIL RESULTS
Mancini had a strong performance, winning nine out of her 15 bouts. 

Freshman Morgan Sanford saw the first action of her WSU career at the Invitational, going 0-6 on the day.

SABRE RESULTS
The lone athlete for WSU in the category was junior Reagan Byars, who went 2-13. She defeated Penn's Hailey Lu and St. John's Lily Nguyen.

Wayne State will next compete in the DeCicco Duals, hosted by Notre Dame, on Saturday, January 28 in South Bend, Ind.
