Men's Basketball Wraps Up Road Trip in Land of Lincoln

The Warriors will face a pair of opponents they've never seen before.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team will take a break from GLIAC play and wrap up a five-game road swing this weekend.  The Warriors will travel to Quincy, Ill. for QU's Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic to face William Jewell on Saturday and the host Hawks on Sunday.

STORYLINES
Wayne State's four-game winning streak was snapped at Northern Michigan on December 7th (69-75) and Michigan Tech defeated the Warriors two days later (77-84).  This week, WSU will take a break from GLIAC play with a trip southwest to Quincy, Ill.   The Warriors will play in QU's Hansen-Spear Funeral Home Classic against William Jewell on Saturday and the host Hawks on Sunday.

William Jewell enters this week with an overall record of 6-3 and a 1-2 mark in GLVC action.  The Cardinals won their first four games of the season, before dropping three of the next four, two of which were by four points or less.  They are coming off an 84-79 victory at Rockhurst on December 9th.

Ten games into the season, Quincy is an even 5-5 overall and 2-2 within the GLVC.  It has been an up-and-down campaign so far for the Hawks as they haven't won or lost more than two contests in a row.  With that being said, three of their five wins have come at home which is where they will be for this week's action.

THE SERIES
Wayne State men's basketball will be facing both William Jewell and Quincy for the first time ever.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS
The Cardinals are led by fifth-year head coach and Interim Athletics Director Chris McCabe.  In four-plus seasons, McCabe owns a record of 51-66 including 31-51 in conference play.  This season, McCabe has turned to one of the top scorers in the GLVC in senior guard Jordan  Jermain and his 17 points per game, good for fifth in the league.  Jermain is one of four scorers averaging double figures for WJC along with fifth-year guard Kobe McKinley (14.8 PPG), senior forward Grant Stubbs (11.4 PPG) and fifth-year guard Trey Shannon (10.6 PPG).  Stubbs has paced William Jewell in the rebounding department (5.4 RPG), while Jermain dishes out 3.1 assists per outing.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS
Quincy head coach Steve Hawkins is in year two of his second stint with the Hawks, the first of which ran from 1990 to 2000.  In those first 10 seasons, Hawkins compiled a record of 137-111 with three NCAA Division II Tournament appearances.  Last season, QU finished 14-15 overall and 10-10 in the GLVC, before a 79-77 loss to Indianapolis in the league tournament quarterfinals.  This winter, Quincy's efforts have been spearheaded by senior guard Zion Richardson (14.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG) and sophomore guard Isaiah Foster (11.5 PPG, 3.2 APG).

LAST TIME OUT - AT MICHIGAN TECH
MTU tallied the first four points before a lay-up from Carmelo Harris put the Warriors on the board just under two minutes into the game.  That marked the beginning of a 6-0 Wayne State run over the next minute and 42 seconds.

After a three-pointer from Adam Hobson tied the score at nine coming out of the first media timeout, the Green and Gold tallied the next nine points to lead 18-9 with 13:03 to play.  During the 9-0 run, Kareem Aburashed made two lay-ups, while Hutch Ward drained a triple.

WSU led by 10 (25-15) when Kaimen Lennox hit a three-pointer with just under 10 minutes remaining.

The two squads played nearly even in the second half of the opening 20 minutes, with the Huskies out-scoring the visitors by one (24-23) over the final 10 minutes.

The final 20 minutes belonged to the home team as Michigan Tech outpaced WSU 46-29 in the final stanza.  The Green and Gold upped its halftime advantage to 12 (53-41) following a Matt Coffey lay-up and a Harris triple.

The tide began to turn when MTU cut Wayne State's lead to one (56-55) with a 14-2 scoring advantage between the 17:36 and 12:34 marks, which forced the Warriors to call a timeout.

WSU notched the next five points via jumpers from Colin Golson, Jr. and Ray Williams, Jr., but Golson and Coffey both fouled out down the stretch and the Huskies out-scored the Warriors 26-16 in the final 10:53 to emerge with the victory.

Despite MTU's hot scoring down the stretch, Wayne State still recorded a better field goal percentage, shooting 49 percent (30-of-61) from the floor compared to Michigan Tech's 43 percent (25-of-58).  However, MTU drilled nine of its 17 three-pointers (53 percent), while WSU made 35 percent (8-of-23) from beyond the arc.  The Huskies went to the free throw line 30 times and sank 25 shots (83 percent), with the Warriors shooting 64 percent (9-of-14) from the charity stripe.

Harris scored a game-best 22 points.  Aburashed's 11 was a season high, while Golson, Jr. also scored in double figures for the contest with an even 10.  All three, along with Tamario Adley, grabbed five rebounds.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Wayne State's offense carries five players averaging at least 9.8 points per game.  They are Carmelo Harris (17.0 PPG), Ray Williams, Jr. (10.8 PPG), Colin Golson, Jr. (10.6 PPG), Matt Coffey (10.0) and Tamario Adley (9.8 PPG).  Williams, Jr. is bringing down a team-high 7.3 rebounds per contest, while Harris is on top of the assist department with 2.9 per outing.  Coffey (.614 field goal percentage - T-4th), Adley (.586 - 7th) and Golson, Jr. (.556 - 9th) all rank among the top 10 in the GLIAC for efficiency.

LIVE ON WDTK
All men's basketball contests (both home and away) will air live on WDTK - The Patriot (1400 AM / 101.5 FM).  Fans can also listen to the audio online at PatriotDetroit.com.  This is the 22nd consecutive season WSU basketball has been aired on 1400 AM.

Kevin Brechmacher is in his eighth season calling the WSU men's games on WDTK.  He will be joined on the broadcast of home games by either Chuck Key (2014-18), Marcus Moore (2014-18) or Andy Dold (1998-2002), all former Warriors.

In addition, every men's basketball GLIAC contest will be televised on FloSports (flohoops.com) per the GLIAC agreement with FloSports.  In addition, all home non-conference games for the men will also be on FloHoops.
