Women's Track and Field Completes Final Tune-Up Before GLIAC Championships

Flowers, McSwain and Owen (twice) record event victories.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Members of the Wayne State University women's track and field squad competed on Friday at the SVSU Tune-Up, the final competition before the 2023 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships next weekend (Feb. 25-26).

Quoting Coach Lofdahl
"This meet was what we needed going into the GLIAC Championships.  Lots of PRs, season bests, and confidence-boosting efforts today.

"Coach Toby Pallett has done a really nice job with our throwers, and they did well once again.  Izzy Taylor hit a PR in weight and had her best shot put performance in two years.  Kaleigh Flowers won the weight throw, with MaKayla Rawls in third with a season-best.  Jasmine Correa had a good day in shot, and Teanna McCuaig set weight PR that puts her ninth in school history.

"On the distance side, Rachel Felstow set a PR with the fourth-best time ever at WSU, Katherine Ray had a season-best in the mile, and both placed second.  Aubrey Migoski led our 3K group with another PR, with Layla Martini and Natalie Davies running new PRs as well.

"Our sprinters and hurdlers are firing on all cylinders now, with Mikaela Owen winning both the 60 and 200, tying her PR in the 60 and a season-best in the 200.  Kay-Lee McSwain and Macie Ries went 1-2 in the 60 hurdles and Kenzie Wellner hit a PR, along with a PR for Emmanuela Johnson in the 60 dash.  The grand finale of the meet was our 4x400 relay squad blazing a new school record, with four really strong legs from Avery Wilson, Renae Kutcha, Kenzie Wellner, and Elyse Miller.

"That was our fifth school record this winter, and we have NCAA provisional marks now in seven different events.  We'll carry all of that momentum into the conference meet next weekend."
