Women's Fencing Picks Up Victory at Central Collegiate Fencing Championships

The Warriors defeated Detroit Mercy in the sixth round on Saturday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team grabbed a victory in the team portion of the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships on Saturday afternoon. The Warriors defeated Detroit Mercy in the sixth round by a 14-9 score, with four double forfeits. WSU dropped matches to Northwestern (21-6), Ohio State (24-3), Denison (22-5), Cleveland State (20-5, plus two double forfeits) and Lawrence (20-7) to finish the afternoon 1-5 at the French Field House. 

EPEE RESULTS
Leading the way in the weapon for the Warriors was Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.), who went a stellar 13-4 for the afternoon. She went unbeaten against four differet teams, not losing a bout to Northwestern (3-0), Denison (3-0), Lawrence (3-0), and Detroit Mercy (2-0). 

Jordan Baetz (Commerce, Mich.) also competed and went 1-16, picking up a victory over Detroit Mercy's Brianna Brown in their overall win against the Titans.

FOIL RESULTS
The lone foilist on Saturday for the Green and Gold was Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), and the freshman once again put in an impressive performance, finishing 13-2 for the day.

She did not have a mark worse than 2-1 against any of the six teams and went unbeaten in rounds one, four, and five.

SABRE RESULTS
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich.) went 4-13 in the team competition, but finished the day on a high note, claiming victory in four bouts over the final two rounds. She defeated Maya Kirkwood of Lawrence in the fifth round and then had a 3-0 mark against Hannah Benford, Adriana Molina, and Claire Olesen of Detroit Mercy in the sixth round.

The individual portion of the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships are set for Sunday from the French Field House in Columbus.
