Women's Fencing Battles It Out at Day One of Northwestern Duals

Mancini tallies eight bout victories for the Warriors.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing team battled it out on the first day of matches Saturday at the Northwestern Duals inside the Ryan Fieldhouse. The Warriors had losses to Boston College (23-4), Incarnate Word (18-6, plus three double forfeits), UC San Diego (25-2) and Ohio State (24-3) to finish the day 0-4.

EPEE RESULTS
Junior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) completed the first day at 3-8 overall. She claimed two of those bout victories over Boston College, defeating the Eagles' Gianina DiDonato and Samantha Davidson. Shevchenko also handled Ohio State's Talia Weiss in the fifth round.

Freshman Jordan Baetz (Commerce, Mich.) also participated and went 1-10, with her bout victory also coming over Weiss.

FOIL RESULTS
It was another standout afternoon for freshman Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy), who had a team-best 8-4 mark, including a perfect 3-0 record over fellow foilist athletes from Incarnate Word.

Mancini was the lone foilist for WSU on day one.

SABRE RESULTS
Junior Reagan Byars was the sole competitor in the sabre category for Wayne State. She finished 0-11.

UP NEXT
After Wayne State finishes their weekend in Evanston on Sunday, February 5, they will not see action again until the weekend of February 25 and 26, where they will compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships in Columbus.
