Women's Fencing Finishes Weekend on Day Two of Northwestern Duals

Warriors battle five opponents, Mancini tallies 11-2 mark.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wayne State University women's fencing squad played five more matches on the second day of action Sunday at the Northwestern Duals. The Warriors finished the day 0-5, with defeats to Temple (25-2), Air Force (24-3), Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) (10-9, plus eight double forfeits), Stanford (23-4) and Cornell (23-4) to end with an 0-9 mark for the two days.

EPEE RESULTS
Junior Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) went 5-10 for the afternoon. Her five wins in the category eclipsed her three-win total from the first day of competition.

Freshman Jordan Baetz (Commerce, Mich.) also collected more victories on day two than on the first day. She defeated Gabriela Cruz of FDU in round three and Cornell's Emma Ni in the fifth round to finish 2-13 overall. 

FOIL RESULTS
Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) once again put together quite the solid day on Sunday, as the junior fenced to an 11-2 mark. The freshman won her final eight bouts for a strong finish to the duals. 

SABRE RESULTS
Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich.) was the solo Warrior in the sabre category. The junior ended the afternoon 0-13 overall.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will not see action again until the weekend of February 25 and 26, where they will compete in the Central Collegiate Fencing Championships in Columbus.
