Men's Fencing Competes at NCAA Midwest Regional

The Warriors sent 10 fencers to Evanston, Ill. on Saturday.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Wayne State University men's fencing team was well-represented in the NCAA Midwest Regional at the Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., as the program sent 10 Warriors to compete in the three weapons on Saturday.

At the Midwest Regional on Saturday, there were a total of twenty-six (26) NCAA Championship bids at stake.  60 percent of each fencer's season score were determined on this day, with the other 40 percent being tallied on competition faced during the school year.

The eight Midwest region universities were all present at Northwestern.  They included the host Wildcats (women only), the Warriors (men and women), Cleveland State (men and women), Notre Dame (men and women), Detroit Mercy (men and women), Ohio State (men and women), Lawrence University (men and women), and Denison University (women only).

EPEE RESULTS
Three Warriors advanced out of the first round of pool play in the epee.

Ahmed Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt) was the best of the group of five WSU members in the category, amassing a mark of 8-8 and finishing in sixth place.  The redshirt senior had a +3 touch differential (42-39) in his 16 bouts. 

Sam Garrett (San Francisco, Calif.) went 8-9 on the afternoon and secured an eighth-place finish.  

Placing 12th in the epee was Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.) with a 3-14 record.

Also competing for the Warriors was Ramadan Dinkins (Chicago, Ill.) and George Varin (Perm, Russia).  The two finished 1-4 and 1-5 while placing 17th and 18th, respectively. 

FOIL RESULTS
Four members of the Green and Gold competed in the foil.

Mitchell Gatrell (Livonia, Mich.) had a 5-8 record and finished in eighth place.  He had a -6 touch differential (42-48) for the 13 bouts.

Also posting a 5-8 record was Skylar Pitcher (Middleville, Mich.), as the senior came in 10th place overall while having a -14 touch differential (36-50).

Coming in 11th place in the weapon was Quinlyn Morgan (Olathe, Kan.) with a mark of 3-10.

Finally, Bobbie Hirsch (Huntington Woods, Mich.) also competed and went 0-13 for a 14th place finish.

SABRE RESULTS
Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt) was the lone Warrior in the category, and the sophomore put forth the best finish on the day, placing fifth overall.  Marouf tallied a 9-4 record and a +16 touch differential (58-42).

UP NEXT
The NCAA will announce the selections to the National Collegiate Fencing Championships on March 14th.  Each of the four regions nationally (Mid-Atlantic/South, Midwest, West, and Northeast) receive a set amount of bids per weapon per gender with two national at-large bids per weapon per gender also being awarded.  The breakdown of the bids for the Midwest Region is as follows: (women's foil- 5, women's epee - 4, women's sabre - 4, men's foil - 4, men's epee - 5, men's sabre - 4).
