Shevchenko and Mancini Compete at NCAA Midwest Regional

The two fencers represented the women's fencing program in Evanston, Ill.

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Two members of the Wayne State University women's fencing team competed at the NCAA Midwest Regional inside Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill. on Saturday morning, as Vika Shevchenko (Troy, Mich.) and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) represented the Green and Gold in the epee and foil, respectively.

At the Midwest Regional on Saturday, there were a total of twenty-six (26) NCAA Championship bids at stake.  60 percent of each fencer's season score were determined on this day, with the other 40 percent being tallied on competition faced during the school year.

The eight Midwest region universities were all present at Northwestern.  They included the host Wildcats (women only), the Warriors (men and women), Cleveland State (men and women), Notre Dame (men and women), Detroit Mercy (men and women), Ohio State (men and women), Lawrence University (men and women), and Denison University (women only).


EPEE RESULTS
Shevchenko had an overall record of 5-12, going 3-3 in the first pool and advancing to the second round of pool play, where she went 2-9.  Her touch differential was -25 (24-49) and she finished 10th overall in the women's epee.
 
FOIL RESULTS
In the women's foil, Mancini also secured a 10th place finish after notching a 3-3 record in the first round of pool play and a 4-7 mark in the second round.  The freshman's touch differential for the competition was -5 (40-45).

UP NEXT
The NCAA will announce the selections to the National Collegiate Fencing Championships on March 14th.  Each of the four regions nationally (Mid-Atlantic/South, Midwest, West, and Northeast) receive a set amount of bids per weapon per gender with two national at-large bids per weapon per gender also being awarded.  The breakdown of the bids for the Midwest Region is as follows: (women's foil- 5, women's epee - 4, women's sabre - 4, men's foil - 4, men's epee - 5, men's sabre - 4).
