The freshman won four bouts on Saturday.

DURHAM, N.C. -- Making her debut appearance at the 2023 NCAA Fencing Championships, Wayne State University women's fencing student-athlete Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) began her event by winning four bouts in the round-robin foil competition on Saturday inside Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The freshman sits in 20th place overall after a 4-11 showing after day one, consisting of the first three rounds of round robin play.  She currently has a -23 touch differential (41-64) after 15 total bouts.

Mancini's four victories were against Anna Novoseltseva of Temple (5-0), Melissa Kline of Air Force (5-3), Crystal Qian of Stanford (5-4), and Helen Tan of Yale (5-3).  Three of her four triumphs came in the third round, the final round contested on Saturday.

The Warrior has eight more bouts remaining, which will be played on Sunday in Durham.  This makes up rounds four and five of the competition.

As a team, Wayne State is positioned in 19th overall (with 19 bout victories) after day three of the four-day NCAA Championships.  The overall team score consists of both men's and women's action across the entire weekend.  There are 28 teams with at least one athlete in either gender.

The same as in the men's championship, the top four finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places.  Mancini will look to improve her place in the overall standings on the final day of the event.
