Mancini Wraps Up Fencing Campaign on Final Day of NCAA Championships

The Warriors complete the fencing season by finishing in 19th overall place for the four-day event.

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Wayne State University fencing program wrapped up the four-day 2023 NCAA Fencing Championships from Cameron Indoor Stadium, as Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) fenced in the final two rounds of round robin action on Sunday afternoon.

Mancini put a bow on her debut at the NCAA Championships, culminating in a 19th place overall finish in the women's foil.  The freshman compiled a 7-16 record for the five rounds, but had a 3-5 mark on Sunday (rounds four and five).  Two of her bout victories came against fencers from Ohio State, as she defeated Daniia Myroniuk by a 5-3 score and Alina Lee, 5-2.  The other win came over Katina Proestakis Ortiz of Penn (5-1).

Mancini had a -28 touch differential (67-95) for her 23 total bouts across the two days.

The Warrior missed out on competing in the semifinal that consisted of 15-touch bouts to determine the winners of each weapon.  The overall winner of the women's foil was Lauren Scruggs of Harvard.

As a team, Wayne State came home in 19th out of the 28 teams who sent at least one fencer to Durham in either the men's or women's championship.  WSU registered 22 total bout victories with their three fencers.  Notre Dame claimed top spot with 188 bout wins, 13 more triumphs than second-place Princeton (175).
