Women's Track Sixth Heading Into Final Day of GLIAC Championships

Smith, Justice, Warren and DMR earn points for the Warriors

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's indoor track and field squad is tied-for-sixth after day one of the 2024 GLIAC Indoor Track and Field Championships being held at the SVSU Fieldhouse.  The 14 points accumulated by the Warriors on day one are the fourth-most in the 12-year history of the program.

Sophomore Idalia Shadhaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Sterling Heights/Career Prep Center) placed ninth in the pentathlon with 2,656 points, which surpassed her previous season-best mark of 2,612.

In the weight throw event, freshman Makayla Stewart (Novi, Mich.) finished 15th with a best throw of 11.47m.

The other field event contested on Saturday was the long jump.  Sophomore Annabelle Smith (Blissfield, Mich.) earned five points with a fourth-place finish.  Her best mark of the day was 5.33m.  Freshman Nicole Warren (Saline, Mich.) garnered two points with a seventh-place finish with a distance of 5.01m.  Fifth-year senior Mikayla Williams (St. Charles, Mich.) placed 10th at 4.81m.

Neither hurdler advanced to Sunday's finals in the 60m hurdles event as sophomore Richelle Cotter (Mt. Morris, Mich. / Flint Carman-Ainsworth) lowered her season-best time to 9.42 to finish 13th, while newcomer Keneisha Thomas (Madison Heights, Mich. / Lamphere) also posted a season-best time (9.51) to place 14th.

Two Warriors advanced to Sunday's finals in the 400m dash.  Junior Renae Kutcha (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi) had the fastest prelims time at 57.38, which is a season-best mark.  Sophomore Avery Wilson (Davison) also set a personal-best with a time of 57.61, to place fourth, while classmate Elyse Miller (Woodhaven, Mich. / Gibraltar Carlson) finished 11th (59.25).

In the 60m dash prelims, senior Mikaela Owen (Bridgman, Mich.) advanced with a time of 7.80 (just .01 off her season-best).  Freshman Sasha-Gay Thompson (Plymouth/Shantamee, Jamaica / Titchfield) placed 10th (7.94), while Smith was 16th (7.99).

Wayne State junior Reagan Justice (Canton,Mich. / Salem) tallied three points with a sixth-place finish in the 5,000m race.  Her time was 17:24.21.  Sophomore Aubrey Migoski (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) knocked nearly 25 seconds off her season-best time to place 11th with a time of 17:57.30).  Junior Mattie Drennan (Clarkston, Mich.) finished 16th (18:46.23).

No WSU competitor advanced to the finals in the 200m dash as Owen placed ninth (25.39), Thompson was 10th (25.52) and sophomore Hanne Bastiaansen (Tessenderlo, Belgium / KS Diest) finished 11th (25.56).  Owen's time was sixth in program history

In the final event of the evening, Wayne State's DMR (Distance Medley Relay) quartet of sophomore Rachel Felstow (Leonard, Mich. / Romeo), Thomas, freshman Anna Gdowski (Northville, Mich.), and fifth-year senior Thailyia Christensen (Flushing, Mich.) matched their seed with a fifth-place finish in a time of 12:05.29 to earn four points in the team standings.  It was also the third-fastest time in school history.
