Spicer Collects Fifth Career GLIAC Men's Tennis Player of the Week Award

The Warrior went undefeated in both singles and doubles to begin conference play.

DETROIT -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) released its 10th round of weekly tennis awards on Wednesday morning, and Wayne State University men's tennis graduate student Dom Spicer (London, England) earned the recognition from the league office for the previous week.

Spicer began GLIAC action with a 2-0 mark in both singles and doubles against Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech.  Both contests were at home for WSU as part of a four-match home stand with teams in the conference.

In the Warriors' 6-1 victory over the Lakers this past Friday, Spicer claimed a 6-2, 6-3 triumph vs. Driss Sedrati at the third flight.  Prior to that, he and Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) teamed up for a 6-4 doubles win over Sedrati and Jordi Fraile Raton at the No. 2 doubles position.

Spicer put in another strong effort the following day versus the Huskies, as the grad student secured set wins of 6-4 and 6-3 to down Leon Sell at the No. 3 singles spot on Saturday.  He and Laws once again paired together in doubles, this time defeating Eli Pinnoo and Landon Coates by a 6-2 margin to help the Green and Gold to their fourth 7-0 shutout of the season.

With the triumphs, Spicer improved to 11-5 in doubles for the campaign, all at the second flight, and an even 7-7 in singles contests.

It's his fifth time being named GLIAC Player of the Week in his five-year collegiate career, and first since the 2022 campaign when he collected the honor three times on his way to being named GLIAC Player of the Year for that season.  He also was Player of the Week once in 2021.

A student-athlete on the team has now been recognized with this award in six out of the 10 weeks this season.  Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) has been honored three times, while Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) has been named Player of the Week twice.

Spicer and the rest of his Wayne State teammates will continue league play at home on Friday, April 12, against Grand Valley State.  That match will be followed by WSU's final regular season home contest on Sunday, April 12, vs. Ferris State.  The two match-ups will be the final ones at home for the Warriors in the regular season, as they look to finish the home slate a perfect 10-0 in 2024.
