Men's Tennis Falls to Ferris State in Regular-Season Home Finale

The Warriors finish the home slate with a 9-1 ledger in 10 contests.

DETROIT -- The No. 22-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (11-9 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) lost a close 4-3 decision to #28-Ferris State (13-4 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) on Sunday at the WSU Tennis Courts in what was the regular-season home finale for the Warriors.

The win for FSU puts the Bulldogs in the driver's seat for the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship.  Ferris State now leads WSU by one match with two contests remaining for both squads.  Wayne State will finish the regular season with a 9-1 ledger at home.

Sunday was also the first outdoor action of the season on the new WSU Tennis Courts, which were renovated prior to the 2024 campaign.  The Warriors had played all prior matches indoors at the Duchene Athletic Facility.

DOUBLES
Ferris State secured all three doubles matches to collect a key point in the critical matchup.

In a heavyweight battle at the first doubles position, the second-ranked Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) faced the No. 12-ranked Jan Koupil and Benjamin Lortie.  However, the WSU duo fell by a 6-3 score.

The No. 11-ranked Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) had a tight contest with Esunge Ndumbe and Alessandro Santangelo, but came up short in a 7-6 (7-4) decision to lose at the No. 2 spot.

FSU's tandem of Kevin Kovacs and Yannic-Alexander Mader downed Denali Kitayama (West Bloomfield Township, Mich. / Walled Lake Central (United States Air Force Academy)) and Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) 6-4 at the third flight.

SINGLES
Even though the two teams split the six singles matches, the Bulldogs held on for the 4-3 win due to their early 1-0 advantage.

The Green and Gold's top three players all earned victories in straight sets.  Grey, ranked eighth in the country, handled the No. 19-ranked Ndumbe in impressive action (6-4, 6-3) at the first flight.  The senior improved to 15-5 in singles for the season and has now won five consecutive contests.

Drenth, ranked 13th in Division II, collected his seventh straight triumph in the category.  He defeated the No. 41-ranked Lortie by set scores of 6-2 and 6-1.

Over at the third flight, Spicer had victories of 6-2 and 6-4 to drop Mader for WSU's third triumph in the category.

Kitayama claimed the second set 6-2 against Koupil at the No. 4 position, but the FSU player notched wins of 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2 in the other two sets to nab the win.

Hill lost 6-3, 6-2 to Santangelo at the No. 5 spot in what was the only Wayne State loss in singles to not be decided in three sets.

The Warriors nearly pulled off the comeback, but a pair of tiebreakers did not go their way.  That was exemplified at the sixth flight, where Laws squared off with Kovacs.  After the two participants split the opening two sets (Kovacs 6-4 and Laws 6-3), the final set went to another tiebreaker.  Kovacs won that by a 7-4 score to finish the victory.
