Men's Tennis Competes at Viking Invitational

CLEVELAND -- The Wayne State University men's tennis squad finished competition at Cleveland State's Viking Invitational on Sunday.  The tournament was a three-day event and was held at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion.

WSU was joined by Duquesne University, Niagara University, Youngstown State University, members of the Case Western Reserve University tennis team, and host institution Cleveland State.

On the weekend, Wayne State student-athletes complied a 25-16 mark in singles play, while going 12-6 in doubles competition.  The Green and Gold had three individuals advance to the semifinals of the main singles draw, as George Day (Southampton, United Kingdom), Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), and Tom Wasner (Altenholz, Germany) were three of the final four standing.  Wasner made his way to the final match but fell 6-3, 6-2 to a student-athlete from Youngstown State.  On the doubles side, the Pairing of Wasner and Sam Knowles (North Shields, Tyne and Wear, England) collected a 4-0 ledger, defeating a duo from CSU 6-3 in the championship round.

FROM HEAD COACH BRYAN MORROW
"This was a great tournament for the Warriors.  I was really happy with all of the learning and the on-court coaching that we were able to do.  The guys had an amazing effort, I was really pleased with how we competed.  Our growth as a team this semester has been really solid, all of the hard work that they have put in is showing in the results."

"We won the main draw doubles with Tom (Wasner) and Sam (Knowles), they played very well, had a very solid performance.  It has been fun getting that partnership back together after they spent some time together last season."

"In singles, we had three of the four players in the main draw semifinals, we were unable to get a win there, the Youngstown State student-athlete is an unbelievable player."

"I was very pleased with the progress that this team has made.  I am very happy with where the moral and spirit of this team is and this was a very good tournament for us."

UP NEXT
The WSU men's tennis team will return to Detroit to host its Third Annual Mike Kneale Memorial Doubles Tournament on Friday, October 31, in the Duchene Athletic Facility.
