Men's Golf Ranks Second After First Round of GLIAC Championships

The 22nd-ranked Warriors trail #9-Grand Valley State by just one stroke after 18 holes.

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. -- The 22nd-ranked Wayne State University men's golf squad began its postseason journey at the 2025 GLIAC Championships on Friday afternoon.  WSU posted a team score of 284 (-4) for the day, which slots the Green and Gold second overall behind #9-Grand Valley State (-5, 283) following the first 18 holes of stroke play.

The Warriors were one of just four schools (GVSU, Roosevelt, and Saginaw Valley State) to shoot par or better on the Bedford Valley GC layout.

Wayne State was paced by both Ian Smith (Canton, Mich. / Plymouth) and Luc Warnock (McGregor, Ont. / E.J. Lajeunesse [Northern Illinois]), as both student-athletes sit in a second-place logjam with five others that carded a three-under 69.  The seven participants in the runner-up spot all trail GVSU's Manuel Cue, who shot a four-under 68.

"Pretty happy with the day overall.," said head coach Mike Horn.  "Even though our captain Josh DiCarlo struggled, the rest of the guys picked him up pretty well.  I think he will be back in form tomorrow.  Congratulations to Ian [Smith] and Luc [Warnock] on their excellent rounds today -- we will need all Warriors firing on all cylinders tomorrow in order to make medal match play.  This is a very strong conference, as evidenced by plenty of good team scores today."
