Two Men's Tennis Players Earn Academic All-District Recognition

Drenth and Hill honored for work in the classroom.

DETROIT -- Two members of the Wayne State University men's tennis program have been recognized with Academic All-District honors by the College Sport Communicators (CSC, formerly CoSIDA) for the 2024-25 season.

Senior Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany / Altkönigschule Kronberg) and sophomore Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany / Burgau-Gymnasium) were the two Warriors receiving honors, in which the nation's top student-athletes are recognized for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

Drenth, who has been a CSC First Team Academic All-American each of the last two years, including CSC Division 2 Men's Tennis Academic All-American of the Year in 2023, has a 3.96 cumulative grade-point average, while majoring in Finance.  He was a two-time GLIAC Player of the Year (2023 and 2025) and earned All-GLIAC First Team honors in both singles and doubles each of the last two seasons.  Drenth garnered Second Team All-GLIAC recognition in 2022, and First Team accolades in 2023 before the conference split up singles and doubles.  This year, Drenth compiled a 24-10 singles record, all at the first flight and is ranked No. 49 in the nation in Divisio 2.  He also played the first flight in doubles recording a 25-8 mark.  Drenth and George Day were ranked No. 31 nationally in the latest ITA rankings.  Drenth ranks No. 1 in school history in both singles wins (106) and doubles victories (122), having played first doubles all four years.

In Drenth's four years on the squad, Wayne State had an 81-34 overall record, including a 22-4 mark in GLIAC regular-season matches and an 11-4 record in the NCAA Tournament.

Hill is recognized in his first year of eligibility.  He compiled an 18-8 singles record this year primarily at the No. 4 and No. 5 flights.  Hill has a 14-16 doubles mark at the third flight, while playing with three different partners.He has a career doubles record of 24-27 at the third flight.  Hill maintains a 3.55 cumulative GPA, while majoring in Sport Management.

This past spring, WSU went 15-8 overall, and tied-for-second in the GLIAC with a 5-2 mark.  After defeating Ferris State for the second consecutive time in a GLIAC Tournament semifinal match, the Warriors fell in the championship match to Grand Valley State.  In the first round of the NCAA Tournament, the FSU Bulldogs edged Wayne State 4-3.
