Women's Outdoor Track and Field Places Third At GLIAC Championships

Warriors have five podium finishes on day two.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's outdoor track and field squad concluded the 2025 GLIAC Championships with a third-place finish with 108 points. This marks the fourth consecutive year that WSU finished either second or third at the conference meet. The 91 points by the Warriors on day two are the third-most in program history.

Wayne State had five podium (top three) finishes on Friday. Keneisha Thomas was the runner-up in the 400m hurdles breaking her own school record. Hanne Bastiaansen was second in the 200m dash, while the 4x400m relay quartet of Avery Wilson, Elyse Miller, Renae Kutcha and Makenzie Wellner concluded the championships with a second-place finish.

The 4x100m relay began Friday's track events with a third-place finish. That group consisted of Catalla Jones, Emmanuela Johnson, Hanne Bastiaansen and Rachel Overgaard. Also finishing third was Olivia Findlay in the high jump.

"This team has been incredible all year. The level of competition in the GLIAC is so high, and seems to go up every year, so to score over 100 points for the fourth consecutive year is a great accomplishment. That is a testament to the talent and leadership of our senior class: Wayne State had never scored close to 100 points at a GLIAC Outdoor Championship until they arrived, and we did it all four of their years on the team.

"Our field event folks held their own against some outstanding athletes. Olivia Findlay got on her first GLIAC podium as a freshman, and she's had a nice season in high jump. Ania Toboy really stepped up in her first outdoor championship meet, scoring in both discus and hammer. Annabelle Smith and Nicole Warren had season-bests and scored some points for us in the horizontal jumps, and Makayla Stewart did a nice job in shot put.

"Reagan Justice closed out an incredible GLIAC career with her third straight conference title in the 10,000 meters, and battled back to get fourth in the 5,000 as well. Anna Gdowski and Rachel Felstow both ran really well in the 800 and scored some big points, and Aubrey Migoski had a nice 1500. Annalee Misch, Mattie Drennan, and Taylor Hopkins competed really well in the long-distance races as well.

"Our sprinters and hurdlers were fantastic throughout the meet, with four finalists in both the 100 and 200-meter dashes. Elyse Miller, Catalla Jones, Hanne Bastiaansen, Emmanuela Johnson, and Rachel Overgaard all did an outstanding job. Avery Wilson and Renae Kutcha were fantastic with lifetime PRs in the 400 final, and Keneisha Thomas and Megan Zahnow did very well in the 100 hurdles. Keneisha's 400 hurdle final was probably the best race we've had from anyone on the team all season as she annihilated the school record by two full seconds. Makenzie Wellner has been the heart of our team for years, and she had a great final GLIAC meet with PRs in both hurdle races and a great leg on our 4x400 relay.

"Our coaching staff of Nate Miller, Celine Freemen-Gibb, and Samantha Miller did an outstanding job with the team this year, and I am proud of them as well as being extremely proud of our seniors: Kenzie, Reagan, Annalee, Renae, Mattie, and Natalie. They set a high bar, but I think next year's team can clear it and to continue to evolve and excel."
