Five Women's Track Student-Athletes Garner Academic All-District Honors

Bastiaansen, Justice, Kutcha, Wellner and Wilson recognized for work in the classroom.

DETROIT -- Five members of the Wayne State University women's cross country and track & field squad have been selected to receive Academic All-District recognition from College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA).

The five Warriors recognized for academic and athletic success were junior Hanne Bastiaansen (Tessenderlo, Belgium), senior Reagan Justice (Canton, Mich. / Salem), senior Renae Kutcha (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi), senior Makenzie Wellner (Menominee, Mich.) and junior Avery Wilson (Davison, Mich.).

To be eligible for CSC Academic All-District honors which will be based off TFRRS regional performance rankings at the time of nomination. Note: Only individual ranked performances are to be used for eligibility. If a student-athlete has participated in a RELAY EVENT, that can bolster the nomination but the basic criteria to be met is for INDIVIDUAL performances. Relays cannot be the basis for eligibility.

NCAA institutions: 
  • Cross Country - Top-50 individual performance at the 2024 NCAA regional competition 
  • Track - Top-50 regional ranking in single event (indoor or outdoor) 

A student-athlete must have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) and if they are in graduate school must have the 3.50 GPA as both an undergraduate and a grad student unless they are in their first semester as a graduate student and don't have an established graduate GPA.

Bastiaansen, who maintains a 3.87 cumulative GPA as a Management major, won the 200m dash at the GLIAC Indoor Championships in a season-best time of 24.55.  She finished second in the 200m dash at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships, and was a member of the third-place 4x100m relay.  Bastiaansen posted a season-best time of 24.27 for 200m during the GLIAC prelims.  She has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all six semesters, including two 4.0 terms.

Justice competed in two NCAA Championships during her final year and narrowly missed the third (missed qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the 5K race by four seconds.  She graduated with a 3.58 cumulative GPA in Early & Elementary Education.  In the fall, Justice earned All-American honors after a 37th-place finish (21:24.70) at the NCAA Championships.  She was named All-Region by the USTFCCCA after finishing third (21:22.45) at the NCAA Midwest Regional Championship.  She was First Team All-GLIAC after a fourth-place performance at the conference cross country championships.  Justice won the 5,000m race at the GLIAC Indoor Championships (16:56.52) and placed sixth in the 3,000m event (9:50.30).  She earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the 10,000m run for having one of the top five times in the region.  Justice finished 19th at the NCAA Championships, after winning the 10,000m race (35:32.55) at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships for the third consecutive year.  She also placed fourth in the 5,000m run (17:12.41).  Justice held four school records when she graduated.  She earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) each of her last four terms before completing her student teaching during the Winter 2025 semester.

Kutcha graduated with a 3.55 cumulative GPA as a Marketing major.  At the 2025 GLIAC Indoor Championships, she finished sixth in the 400m dash in a season-best time of 57.08; placed seventh in the triple jump (10.42m); and was a member of the runner-up 4x400m relay.  Kutcha finished sixth in the 400m dash at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships in a season-best time of 56.58; placed ninth in the triple jump (10.42m); and was a member of the second place 4x400m relay.  She was a member of the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) five times and the Coach's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.0-3.49) the other three semesters.

Wellner also graduated this spring with a degree in Nursing and a 3.83 cumulative GPA.  She was a member of the second-place 4x400m relay and third place DMR at the GLIAC Indoor Championships.  At the GLIAC Outdoor Championships, Wellner finished fifth in the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:02.83; placed 11th in the 100m hurdles with a season-best time of 15.05; and was a member of the second place 4x400m relay.  She was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all eight semesters, with three 4.0 terms.

Wilson maintains a 3.97 cumulative GPA, while majoring in Nutrition and Food Science.  She finished fourth in the 400m dash at the GLIAC Indoor Championships in a season-best time of 56.72, along with being a member of the runner-up 4x400m relay.  Wilson finished fourth at the GLIAC Outdoor Championships in the 400m dash in a season-best time of 56.26.  She was also a member of the second place 4x400m relay.  Wilson has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term GPA 3.5+) all six semesters, with five 4.0 terms.
