DETROIT -- Mike Horn, 24-year head coach of the Wayne State University men's golf team, was named GLIAC Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career (2004, 2007, 2010, 2013, 2025). Horn led the Warriors to the GLIAC Championship in April, WSU's first since 2003 and just the second in program history.
Horn joins Ferris State's Ron English (10-time honoree), who coached the Bulldogs from 1979 to 1997, as the league's only five-time recipients of the award. Horn and English are two of just five head coaches to have received the distinction in at least four seasons. The other three are Gary Bissell of Grand Valley State, Don Underwood of GVSU and Bob Becker of Saginaw Valley State.
This past season, Horn paced the Warriors to their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 21 seasons (not including COVID season in 2019-20) following a regular season that saw them claim eight individual tournament titles out of 11 events competed in. WSU also finished second twice, was among the top five for every regular-season event and placed two student-athletes on each of the three All-GLIAC teams.
Those six honorees included
Josh DiCarlo (First Team),
Max Leppelmeier (First Team),
Tyler Hurtubise (Second Team),
Luc Warnock (Second Team),
Ian Smith (Honorable Mention), and
Andrew Daily (Honorable Mention/Freshman of the Year). DiCarlo and Leppelmeier also garnered GCAA PING All-Region Accolades.
Looking ahead to Horn's 25th season at the helm in 2025-26, he'll rely upon returners like Daily,
Josh Lahner,
Shawn Sehra,
Troy Chapman, and
Jack Julian.
