WSU Football - 2025 Offensive Line Preview

DETROIT -- Over the next two weeks, we will continue previewing each position on the 2025 Wayne State University football team with each position coach highlighting their respective units. This segment is the offensive line preview with coach Rosco Byrd, Jr., who is in his third season on coach Tyrone Wheatley's staff.

After being one of WSU's most experienced position groups in 2024, the 2025 offensive line contingent will look much different. Aidan Tweedy (22 starts) transferred to Northern Illinois for his fifth year, while Charles Wesley (25 starts), Owen Salingue (3 starts) and Tyler Schompert (23 starts) all graduated.

Redshirt junior Will Edwards (Cincinnati, Ohio / Winton Woods) is the veteran of the group having played in 20 games, making 10 starts (nine at right guard and one at left guard). Classmate Jayden Lewin (Grand Blanc, Mich.) started the final 10 games a season ago (first seven at left guard, and final three at center).

Redshirt senior Sherod Green (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville [Fullerton C.C. / Davenport]) returns after missing all of last season with an injury, while redshirt junior Ethan Gates (St. Clair Shores, Mich. / Lakeview) played in the final nine games of 2024 making a pair of starts.

Also returning are a pair of redshirt freshmen in Mikey O'Brien (Toledo, Ohio / Whitmer) and Richardo Wourman (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson). Wourman appeared in three games last fall, making two starts and was the recipient of the WSU Offensive Rookie of the Year award. O'Brien dressed for six of the first seven games, but did not see any playing time, then missed the final four games due to an injury.

Due to the lack of returning depth, WSU has added five freshmen and one transfer to the roster. Freshman Trezelle Jenkins, Jr. (Belleville, Mich.) was an early enrollee in January, just like his father was at Michigan in 1991.

First-year collegiate players include Lance Blakely, Jr. (Reynoldsburg, Ohio / Pickerington North), Ken Franklin (Detroit, Mich. / Harper Woods), Jonathan Major (Sanford, Fla. / Parish Episcopal [Dallas]), Keathan Smith (Fort Worth, Texas / Liberty Christian) and Evan Wittmann (Houston, Texas / St. Pius X).

The lone transfer is Trent Leicht, who played for the Golden West (Community) College Rustlers of the Southern California Football Association in 2022 and 2023.

Wayne State began fall practice this past Monday afternoon. The home and season opener will take place on Thursday, Sept. 4 with a 6 p.m. kickoff against the Tiffin Dragons.
