WSU Hall of Fame Basketball Player Monique Johnson Has Passed Away

DETROIT -- Former Wayne State University women's basketball standout Monique Johnson, who was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2008, passed away on July 28th following a courageous battle with cancer.

Visitation will take place on Wednesday, August 13th from 4 p.m.-7 p.m. at Q A Cantrell Funeral Services (22121 Kelly Road, Eastpointe, MI  48021) with Interment the following day.

Johnson was a four-year Wayne State basketball letterwinner (1988-93).

A graduate of Detroit Osborn High School, Johnson was the 1988-89 GLIAC Freshman of the Year after averaging 12.4 points per game and finishing second on the team in assists (60), steals (55) and blocks (10).

The following season she earned Second Team All-GLIAC honors after starting all 28 contests and averaging 15.4 points per game. The 5-6 guard scored in double figures 22 times and recorded 143 assists.

After missing all but the first two games of the 1990-91 season due to an injury, Johnson started 22 games the following season and led the Tartars with 95 assists and 59 steals, while averaging 11.5 points per game.

As a co-captain in 1992-93 she started all 25 games and finished second on the squad with 339 points and 44 steals while leading the team in assists (79) and blocks (10).

WSU's all-time leading scorer with 1,439 points, she also holds the school record for career field goals made at 568.

She currently ranks among WSU's best in games started (102), assists (5th/382), steals (6th/228), minutes played (6th/3,075), assists per game (8th/3.5), games played (T-10th/109), scoring average (11th/13.2 - min. 30 GP), free throws made (13th/220), blocked shots (T-14th/48), and rebounds (18th/540).

Johnson was a 2003 WSU graduate with a degree in marketing.
