DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer team had two players recognized as GLIAC Players of the Week, as freshman forward
Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) earned Offensive Player of the Week honors and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper
Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) was named Defensive Player of the Week. The awards follow the Warriors' 2-0 victory over Grand Valley State and 2-2 draw at Saginaw Valley State. Mroue collected her third-career Offensive Player of the Week award, while Helfen earned her second-career Defensive Player of the Week selection. The pair previously received the honors together on Oct. 12.
Mroue played a part in all four Wayne State goals over the weekend. Against Grand Valley State, she recorded the primary assist on the opening goal, setting up
Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]), who scored on the rebound of Mroue's shot on goal. She later assisted on
Kate Carrico's (Brighton, Mich. [Western Michigan]) insurance goal just before halftime. At Saginaw Valley State, Mroue assisted on the Warriors' first goal to tie the match at 1-1 before, scoring the go-ahead goal just over 10 minutes into the second half. Mroue leads the GLIAC in goals (10) and points (26), ranks third in assists (6) and is tied for first in game-winning goals (3).
Helfen delivered a strong weekend in goal against two of the conference's top teams. She made a career-high seven saves in Wayne State's 2-0 shutout of Grand Valley State, recording her eighth clean sheet of the season. Helfen followed with another seven-save performance in the 2-2 draw at Saginaw Valley State, stopping 14 of 16 shots on goal across the two matches. She currently leads the GLIAC in goals-against average (0.67) and save percentage (.841), and is tied for first in shutouts (8).
QUOTING HEAD COACH DOUG STEINARD
"Sienna continues to show she is one of the top players in the conference. She continues to impress the coaching staff with her eagerness to learn and continues to get better. Kate has been an instrumental part of where our team is at today. This is long overdue for her. We are so proud of both of them."
