Fencing to Host Danosi Open

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University fencing program will host its Danosi Open on Saturday, February 7, inside the Matthaei Center.

With the event being an open, there will be no team competitions and fencers will compete as individuals.

WSU will honor its seniors prior to the start of the event.

Competing from the men's epee team will be Justin Chenh (Falls Church, Va.), Shuayb Dinkins (Kissimmee, Fla. / Lincoln Park / Celebration), Bryce Heim (Oconomowoc, Wis.), and Cameron King (Laurel, Md. / DeMatha Catholic).  For men's foil is Josiah Atkinson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), Chenh, Sam Gneuhs (Livonia, Mich. / Churchill), Finn McIsaac (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Jakub Oronowicz (Clarkston, Mich.), and Lukas Tsao (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.).  In men's sabre will be Hunter Battisfore (Hancock, Mich. / Houghton), Connor Desautels (Redding, Conn. / Joel Barlow), Gabriel Dumoulin (Newtown, Conn.), Brendan Goeddeke (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren De La Salle), Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt / European International School of Alexandria), and Gwyd Perry (Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills).

On the women's side, Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary / Vörösmarty Mihály) will see action in the women's epee.  Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela / Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel), Noreen Bongado (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Farmington), and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy / Liceo Linguistico Niccolò Machiavelli) will fence in the women's foil.  In women's sabre, Shriya Bangalore (Frisco, Texas / Centennial), Reagan Byars (Warren, Mich. / Warren Woods Tower [Macomb CC]), Mikhala Rivers (Maple Grove, Minn. / DeLaSalle), and Mehreen Siddiqui (Canton, Mich. / Salem) will compete.

ISTVAN DANOSI
The Danosi Open honors long-time coach Istvan Danosi.  Danosi Joined the WSU fencing program in 1957 after escaping his native country of Hungary. In his time as the Wayne State fencing coach, The Maestro guided WSU to five NCAA Fencing Championships (1975, 1979, 1980, and both the men and women in 1982), coached 40 All-Americans, 15 National Champions, and garnered an astounding 283-59 record.  Danosi retired following the 1982 season, and was inducted into the Wayne Sate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1983.

Along with his illustrious career at Wayne State, Danosi also served as the chairman of the U.S. Academy of Arms (National Fencing Coaches Association) and was a member of the Accreditation Committee, where he accredited the first female fencing master in the United States, Muriel Bower.
