HEIDENHEIM, Germany -- Wayne State University fencing student-athlete
Mahmoud Elsayed (Tanta, Gharbia, Egypt / El Nasr Official Language School) competed in the Heidenheim World Cup.
The sophomore epeeist tallied a 4-2 mark in pool play, while notching a +4 touch differential (25-21). In preliminary direct elimination, Elsayed topped Wiktor Walach 15-6, Alexandre Camargo 15-12, and Miguel Frazao 15-12.
Elsayed was matched with No. 11-seeded Tristan Tulen of the Netherlands in the table of 64. The two battled with each other, exchanging touches back-and-forth. Tulen claimed a 15-12 victory over the Warrior, and eventually advanced to the semifinals round, finishing tied-for-third.
Mahmoud now ranked 24th in the world in senior men's epee.
In team competition, Elsayed competed with team Egypt, helping the squad to a 1-1 mark. During the 39-31 win over Uzbekistan, he was an even 14-14 in touches, and secured 12 touches in the 45-42 loss to Ukraine.
