Women's Basketball Selected For NCAA Tournament

DETROIT -- The 2025-26 Wayne State University women's basketball squad (23-7 overall) received an at-large bid Sunday evening into the NCAA Division 2 women's basketball tournament.

WSU is seeded fourth and will face the No. 5 seed Northern Michigan University (25-7 overall) on Friday in Allendale as Grand Valley State earned the top seed and will host the eight-team regional this Friday, Saturday and Monday (March 16th).  GVSU (30-1 overall) will battle the No. 8-seed Maryville University (25-6 overall) on Friday.

The other four teams in the Midwest Regional are second-seeded Ferris State University (26-6 overall), No. 3 seed Northwood University (26-5 overall), sixth-seeded Malone University (25-6 overall), and the No. 7 seed University of Missouri-St. Louis (24-5 overall).  Northwood won both the Great Midwest Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament titles, defeating the Pioneers 64-53 to claim the G-MAC tournament championship on Saturday.  UMSL won GLVC regular-season, while Maryville defeated the Tritons 83-75 in double overtime earlier this afternoon.

This will be Wayne State's seventh NCAA tournament appearance and sixth in the last 14 years.  WSU fell 91-83 at Indianapolis in 2003.  In 2013, the Warriors advanced to the Regional Championship game (Sweet Sixteen) following victories over #18-Findlay (63-58) and RV-Parkside (70-60).  The host AU Eagles, who were ranked No. 2 nationally, won the Midwest Regional Championship game 72-63 despite a double-double by Juanita Cochran (15 points, 17 rebounds) and a near double-double by Talisha Bridges (18 points, 9 rebounds).

The next season WSU advanced to the Regional Championship again after triumphs over RV-Indianapolis (63-58) and #11-Lewis (87-80).  Wayne State dropped a 99-63 decision at sixth-ranked Drury.

The Warriors won their opening round game in 2015 in Houghton, Mich., claiming a 75-61 victory over No. 7-Drury.  Wayne State suffered a 71-63 setback to fourth-ranked Lewis the next day.  In 2022, WSU fell 72-46 to sixth-ranked Grand Valley at Ashland.  Last year in Allendale, the Warriors upended 17th-ranked Lewis 77-57, before falling to the eventual national champion GVSU Lakers 87-54 in the regional semifinal.

GVSU has won 42 of its last 43 contests dating back to Feb. 16, 2025, with the lone blemish being a 78-77 setback at WSU on Feb. 7, 2026.

All Wayne State games in the NCAA Midwest Regional will be broadcast on the Warrior Sports Network with Kevin Brechmacher calling the action.
