Women's Soccer To Conclude Non-League Slate With Sunday Match At Madonna

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's soccer program (3-0 overall) will complete the non-conference portion of its schedule this Sunday morning with a 10:30 AM match at Madonna University (2-2 overall).  Video feed of the contest will be available via the Madonna Athletics Network.

TEAM RECORDS
WSU has a 3-0 mark and has not allowed a goal with victories at Northwood (2-0) and at Detroit Mercy (1-0), followed by home triumph over Ohio Dominican (4-0) on Friday evening.  The Crusaders are 2-2 on the season.  After back-to-back losses to open the season (2-1 vs. Indiana University Northwest and 4-3 at NAIA #19 Cumberland University), MU has won its last two matches (3-0 vs. Freed-Hardeman University and 3-0 at the University of Saint Francis).

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Kate Helfen (Troy, Mich. [Cincinnati]) has three consecutive clean sheets.  Helfen has turned aside all seven shots on goal she has faced.  Redshirt senior and team captain Reagan Brengman (Harrison Township, Mich. Warren Regina [Northwood]) was selected GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week (Aug. 31) as she anchored the defense in the two shutouts, while playing all 180 minutes (the only player to do so besides Helfen).

Freshman Sienna Mroue (Dearborn, Mich.) has scored a goal in each match so far this season and leads the squad with seven points (3G, 1 A).  Graduate student Mairin Wessner (Northville, Mich. [Dayton]) tallied the first goal of the season which was the game-winner at Northwood.  Sophomore Jenna Moeller (Center Line, Mich. / Warren Regina [Siena Heights]) scored twice in the win over ODU to become the first player in program history with a multi-goal game.

Freshman Ellie Whalen (Commerce Township, Mich. / Pontiac Notre Dame Prep) scored the first goal against Ohio Dominican marking the third straight contest that a different player was credited with the game-winning goal, joining Wessner (Northwood) and Mroue (Detroit Mercy).

WSU is led by head coach Doug Steinard, who was hired to start the program in August of 2025.

LEADING THE CRUSADERS
Sophomore forward Carly Roth has tallied three of Madonna's 10 goals this season as the Crusaders have scored exactly three goals in each of their last three matches.  Both senior midfielder Canses Gibson and freshman forward Avery Topinka have three points (1G, 1A) on the year.

First-year head coach Scott Duhl has used four goalkeepers so far this season with sophomore Addison Beil having seen the most minutes (209).  Beil has a 1-2record with a 2.59 GAA.  She has shared goalkeeping duties in each of the last two 3-0 victories for MU.

PRESEASON POLLS
Wayne State was tabbed for seventh in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll, while Madonna was tabbed for third in the 10-team Wolverine-Hoosier Athletics Conference (WHAC) Preseason Coaches Poll.
