GAMBIER, Ohio - The Wayne State University women's swimming team is in fifth place with 311.5 points after two days of competition at the Kenyon College Total Performance Invitational. The Warriors also totaled 15 NCAA “B” qualifying times and two “A” times.
Among Thursday's highlights were four “B” cuts in the 1650 freestyle.
Catherine Leix (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) finished seventh (17.16.60),
Kelsey Dischler (Macomb, Mich./Henry Ford II) came in 14th (17:36.05),
Stephanie Ekleberry (Rochester Hills, Mich./Avondale) placed 18th (17:43.45) and
Alycen Wiacek (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) finished 22nd (17:52.55).
Leix (10:29.02), Dischler (10:38.59) and Ekleberry (10:39.74) all claimed "B" cuts in the 1000 freestyle during their swims as well.
On Friday, two “A” cuts were achieved as
Ana Gonzalez Pena (Gijon, Spain) won the 100 breaststroke (1:02.61) and
Sara Franklin (Caro, Mich.) took first place in the 100 backstroke (54.69).
Several other “B” times were posted on Friday, including the 200 free relay (1:34.73), as Gonzalez Pena, who notched a “B” cut in the 50 free with her leadoff time of 23.70, Christina Busquets Garcia (Banyoles, Spain),
Kayla Scott (Rochester, Mich./Adams) and Franklin came in just .26 seconds behind Kenyon.
Another relay claimed an NCAA “B” qualifier at the end of the evening, as the 400 medley relay combination of Franklin, Gonazlez Pena, Scott and Busquets Garcia finished in first place (3:50.55).
Leix finished 16th in the 200 free (1:55.82) and earned a “B” cut, while Scott improved her prior “B” time in the 100 breaststroke, finishing fourth (1:05.29).
Busquets Garcia, who made a “B” cut in the preliminary heat of the 100 backstroke (57.72) on Friday morning, finished eighth in the evening swim (58.01).
In the 50 free, Gonzalez Pena came in third (23.84) while Franklin took seventh with a “B” cut (24.10). Busquets Garcia won the consolation final and finished 10th overall with a “B” qualifying time of 24.26.
The Kenyon Total Performance Invitational will conclude Saturday.

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The WSU divers were also in action Friday at the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
On the one-meter board,
Carly Sevald (Royal Oak, Mich./Mercy) led the Warriors with a 10th-place finish (219.10).
Cassie Chetosky (Shelby Twp., Mich./Utica) came in 12th (216.05), and
Paige Kortman (Holland, Mich.) finished 14th (210.45).
Emily Mitzelfeld (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) and
Meghan Jaworski (Dundee, Mich.) placed 17th (202.55) and 20th (190.00), respectively.
