DETROIT -- The 2010 Istvan Danosi/Michigan Open was held on Sunday at Wayne State University's Matthaei Building. Student-athletes from three different institutions won gold medals in the men's competition.
WSU senior
Jakub Gibczynski (Lodz, Poland) won his fourth consecutive men's sabre title with a 15-9 triumph over teammate
Andrew Opalewski (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) in the gold medal bout. Opalewski, the top seed after pool play, defeated Detroit Mercy's Tom Lorenzo 15-14 in a semifinal bout, while Gibczynski downed Michigan's
Paul Boswell 15-9 in the other semifinal bout. Gibczynski is on the far right in the picture above, with Opalewski next to Gibczynski. Boswell is next to WSU Maestro
Jerzy Radz.
After finishing third at the 2009 Danosi Open, senior
Joe Fresard (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) reached the gold medal bout in 2010. The third-seeded Fresard upended No. 2 seed Mike Rose of Western Ontario, 15-5, in the semifinals. However, Fresard suffered a 15-4 setback in the championship round to Mark Jones of Windsor, Ontario. Jones had defeated Jacob Trithart of Michigan, 15-13, in the semifinal round.
Junior
Raffi Nersessian (Fort Wayne, Ind. / Culver Military Academy) improved his finish in the Danosi Open for the second straight year. After finishing sixth in 2008, and tied-for-third a year ago, Nersessian reached the gold medal bout following a 15-13 triumph over Detroit Mercy's Brad Coon in the semifinals. The seventh-seeded Coon had upended Warrior
Michael Ramlow (Midland, Mich.), the No. 2 seed, 15-8 in the quarterfinals. Detroit Mercy's Michael Purdy-Sachs claimed first place with a 15-6 win over Nersessian. Purdy-Sachs qualified for the gold medal round after a 15-10 victory over top-seeded Yaroslav Ivanov of Detroit Mercy in the semifinals.
