Four Fencers Garner USFCA All-Region Honors

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University fencing program had four student-athletes named to the All-Midwest Region Team by the United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA).

The four honorees were Reka Galfalvy (Budapest, Hungary), being voted First-Team in women's epee, Eyad Marouf (Alexandria, Egypt), earning Second-Team honors in men's sabre, Anabella Acurero Gonzalez (Valencia, Venezuela), being tabbed to the Second Team in women's foil, and Ludovica Mancini (Rome, Lazio, Italy) being named an Honorable Mention in women's foil.

Galfalvy earns her second All-Region nod after being tabbed to the Second Team a year ago.  The Junior became WSU's all-time leader in career women's epee wins this year, after earning 93 which increased her total amount of wins to 273.  She finished third in the women's epee at the NCAA Midwest Regionals (14-7 record), which is the highest individual finish for a WSU women's fencer since the 2017 campaign, and earned her third First Team All-CCFC (Central Collegiate Fencing Conference) in as many years.

Marouf has tallied a 57-29 record, including a 10-6 record at the NCAA Midwest Regional, in which he finished in fourth place.  This season, the graduate student became Wayne State's all-time leader in career men's foil wins, with 339 in his time with the Green and Gold.  This marks his third All-Region distinction of his career.  In addition, the Warrior received First Team All-CCFC honors this year.

Acurero Gonzalez garners Second-Team honors after an impressive outing this year.  This year, the sophomore has tallied a 60-15 overall record, including a 23-6 record at the CCFC championships, finishing tied-for-third individually.  The WSU student-athlete finished fourth overall at the NCAA Midwest Regionals, collecting a 10-7 bout record.

Mancini sits atop the record book in career wins in the women's foil, with 357, after triumphing 83 times this year.  She earns her third All-Region bid after being named an Honorable Mention the past two campaigns.  At the NCAA Midwest Regionals this year, the senior collected a 10-6 ledger to finish fifth in her weapon.
